He is William L. Thorne, AKA "Uncle Bill" to the Roeding family, and part-time Niles resident.
William Thorne (1878-1948) was Elizabeth Thorne's brother. That's George C. Roeding's wife, Elizabeth, and George C. Roeding Jr.'s "Uncle Bill."

Was it Elizabeth who was the grandmother who lived here when Uncle Bill, her brother, was not living in the Yellow House? Check with the Roeding family! What years would that be?

`1905: He was in Nance O'Neil's company playing at the Tremont Theatre.
1905: He was briefly married to Gertrude Marguerite Binley Kay divorced in 1908. "She met her 1st husband, William Long Thorne, while they were both members of Miss Nance O'Neil's company playing at the Tremont Theatre." (Boston?).

"The wedding occurred at Albany, NY. in Jan. 1905 while they were touring on the NY circuit. Before her professional career, she was prominent in amateur theatricals in Brookline, MA., principally the Criterion Club.
1906: Gertrude left her husband in the spring of 1906, but did not file for divorce until Apr. 1908. Ambitious to resume her stage career and be free from domestic ties, citing neglect and cruel treatment, she joined the Miller and Carruthurs players at the Castle Square Theater in a leading role of "The Sporting Dutchess"."

The Bat
"The Bat" is allegedly a precursor to Batman! However, I've been told that there was no good at all in the motivations of "the Bat."

He preferred Shakespeare and played Cassius in Julius Caesar.

From the Fresno Morning Republican, Monday, February 20, 1922:
Prior to this trip, he played the leading role with Nance O'Neil in the "Passion Flower."
He was also in George M. Cohn's play "The Tavern." which played for 6 months in Chicago.
In Feb 20, 1922, he played the title role of the detective in "The Bat" in Fresno.
On this trip, prior to that he was in San Jose.
He was planning to come back the next year to take the leading part in two Shakespearean plays "Othello" and 'Julius Caesar.' R.D. McLain was to be there as well and he was once a leading man for him.
1925: He played with Al Jolson on the stage "Big Boy." at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1925 as "Bully John Bagby/Wainwright" and at 44th Street Theatre in 1925. ("Big Boy" filmed "Warner Bros./Vitaphone Corporation" (1931).
"A 1926 novelization was credited to Rinehart and Hopwood but ghostwritten by Stephen Vincent Benét"!

In Nov 10, 1921, the Times-Picayune says that he is playing the lead in the Schubert St. Charles Theater.
