Visiting the Pernet-Ducher roses in 1912

The Pernet-Ducher family and the Pernetiana roses

What are Pernetiana roses?
The Pernetiana roses was a category of roses introduced by the Pernet (Pernet-Ducher) family around 1900. It’s not officially a category any longer, like hybrid tea, polyantha, grandiflora, etc. But you will still see it mentioned.

Once upon a time, there were only white and pink and red modern roses. The Pernetiana roses were the first modern roses with the color yellow, introduced around 1900.
We have several Pernetiana roses in our garden: Golden State, Peace, Lady Hillingdon, and probably others. A side “benefit” is that some of these rose descendants are more susceptible to blackspot.
So next time you see blackspot, you can nod and say “Oh, beautiful, it’s not your fault! It’s your genes!"

Mystery photo of the week
This photo of the three men (1912) below recently popped up again as I was looking for who knows what in the archives. The caption said:
"Pernet, his dad, Silver in rose patch Lyons, France”. In another photo the man on the left was said to be Edmund Pernet. The photo was from a Roeding family vacation in Europe in 1912 where they visited many nurseries.

I posted this on the Heritage Rose Group. Jill said that the middle guy was Joseph Pernet-Ducher. And she said that there was no son named Edmund, but there were two sons named Claudius and Georges who died in WWI.

Paul Zimmerman shared the post to his group and tagged Fabian Pernet, a descendant of the Pernet family. Fabian confirmed that the man on the left was Claudius and the man in the middle was Joseph.

As someone commented “Some of the original Rose breeding gods right there!!!”

Fabian shared a picture of a square, in or near Lyons, where he planted several Pernetiana roses and Mlle. Cécile Brunner. Mlle CB is their most famous introduction. We have two Mlle. Cécile Brunner roses in the garden. They are planted in older sections of town and bloom continuously.
