Looking for that plant that is low maintenance, drought tolerant, and is a great tree? And maybe one that will not grow so tall that the utility company hacks at it periodically?
The U.C. Davis Arboretum has selected 100 plants for us. You can search for a specific plant using the All-Starts Plant Search or look at them all. Of the 100 plants, there are 9 trees, two of which are California natives.
The Urban Forest Systems Institute at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has a website SelecTree: A Tree Selection Guide. Of interest for my Fremont neighborhood with utility lines aboveground, there are icons that show which trees are utility friendly. You can also select by many variables, including native, fragrance, wildlife, and drought tolerance.
The LasPilitas website has MyNativePlants website to help you select native plants according to plant communities.

Bob Perry's book Landscape Plants for CA Gardens is recommended by many horticulture folks and you can download the first three chapters. The cost of his book varies daily it seems on Amazon.com. Just wait until it goes from over $300 down to $78.
Southern Tree has fact sheets on trees that are appropriate for the southern US landscapes.
